6 June 1892 – Germany 10pf UPU Postal Card from Peking to Köln A
Germany 10 Pfennig UPU postal card, dispatched from Peking to Köln,
Germany. The indicium is cancelled by “KAISERLICH DEUTSCHE
POSTAGENTUR SHANGHAI 11/6 92” c.d.s. in black. On the obverse is
also a fine strike of the blue double-ring “CUSTOMS TIENTSIN / JUN
7 / 92”. On the reverse appear two further strikes: “I.G. OF
CUSTOMS PEKING / JUN 6 / 92” in blue and “CUSTOMS SHANGHAI / JUN 11
/ 92” in black. At the lower left corner, there are traces of a
missing adhesive and a partial Customs cancellation. Based on the
1892 date of use, the missing stamp is almost certainly a 3
candareens Small Dragon, applied to pay the internal Customs
postage within China. A good example of a Germany UPU postal card
carried entirely within the Imperial Chinese Customs Postal System
before transmission abroad. The combination of Peking, Tientsin,
and Shanghai Customs markings alongside the German Post Office at
Shanghai illustrates the transitional handling of foreign-origin
stationery within the Chinese Customs framework.
OF CUSTOMS PEKING / JUN 6 / 92」藍色及「CUSTOMS
SHANGHAI / JUN 11 / 92」
