3 July 1855, France sent to Canton, China affixed with a stripe of 4 imperforate 40 centimes orange "Empire Franc" stamp (Napoleon III), cancelled by box type Lozenges, with desptach c.d.s. "3 JUIL 55". On the back side, cancelled by double arc 'CANTON 27 AU 1855", and also double arc "HONG KONG 26 AG 1855". It is rare to have a stripe of 4 imperforate 40c Napoleon III stamps on cover sent to China. Secondly, most of covers sent to Canton will not carry any arrival c.d.s. but this one has a fine use of CANTON double arc c.d.s., and hence, very rare in nature. 法國寄往中國廣州 1855年7月3日,自法國寄往中國廣州之信函,貼附罕見的拿破崙三世肖像《帝國法蘭西》橙色40生丁無齒郵票一條四連張,全以方格型點線格“菱形”戰銷。信封正面附有清晰的發信日戳 “3 JUIL 55"。信封背面蓋有「HONG KONG 26 AG 1855」雙圈日戳以及極為罕見之「CANTON 27 AU 1855」雙圈到達日戳。此封信最為珍罕之處,在於兩點:其一,貼用四枚連張無齒40生丁拿破崙三世郵票實寄至中國;其二,多數寄往廣州之信件並無當地到達戳,而本件則保留清晰完整之「CANTON」雙圈到達日戳,尤為難得。

1856 (5 Sept), an envelope sent from France to Canton China, endorsed “Par Marseilles & Suez”, franked with French Ceres 1 x 20c in blue and 1 x 80c in red, tied by star-pointed lozenges cancellation. On the obverse side, cancelled with a blue oval forwarder cachet “B.G. WAINWRIGHT & Co. / 13. R. DU FAUBC MONTMARTRE. / PARIS”, framed “P.P.” in red, rate mark handstamp “1/-”, Paris transit c.d.s. On the reverse, cancelled with Hong-Kong double arc c.d.s (2 Nov 1856). Seldom to see direct mail to Canton in use of French Ceres adhesive. The Arrow Incident broke out in October 1856 opening up the Second Opium War. In Nov 1856, the mail delivery from Hong Kong to Canton was seriously disturbed and often be suspended. Not entirely sure whether this mail could eventually be delivered to Canton at the time. 1856.9.5 法國寄廣州，貼20生丁 + 80生丁，銷星形殺手戳。11.2經香港。貼五穀女神像票寄廣州少見。由於亞羅船事件，香港寄廣州之郵政服務大受影響，故此信有否抵達廣州實屬疑問。

1863 (15 August) a long cover from Shanghae to New York, U.S.A., endorsed “per Messagerias Imperiales” on the lower left corner of the cover, with cancellations of “16 CENTS”, “SHANGHAE PAID / AUG 15, 63”, “LONDON PAID” transit c.d.s. (7 Oct), “N. YORK AM. PKT. / 5 / SEP 19” in black, manuscript rate mark “2/-“ in red crayon. On the reverse, SHANGHAE arrival c.d.s. in black (15 Aug 63), and Hong Kong Index C c.d.s. (21 Aug 63). This cover indicates the postage rate “2/-“ which is the earliest application of 22.8.63 HK rates for French Paquebot. The “2/-“ rate to the US by M.I. vesselis valid for only some 2 months from 22 Aug to 2 Nov, 1863 according to the Lee Scamp’s research. A rare cover with significant postal history value.. YORK BR. PKT / DEC 19 / 5(cts)”, manuscript mark circled “5”. On the reverse side, Hong Kong despatch c.d.s. (26 Oct). The mail was carried by French M.I. steamer “Donnai” and “Moeris” to Marseilles. “Donnai” was its 3rd voyage since the introduction of French MI packet services in Nov 1862. A pair of stampless covers: 1864 (3 Dec) a stampless cover from U.K. to Shanghai, endorsed by via Marseilles (deleted) and amended to Southampton, with two manuscript rates of “2/-” and “2”. On the reverse side, Hong Kong Index C c.d.s. in blue (25 Jan) and Shanghai arrival c.d.s. in blue as well (31 Jan). The first rate “2/-” stands for a double rate, and the latter “2” represents the inter-Treaty ports rate charge from HK to Shanghai. 1865 (4 July) a stampless cover from Shanghai to the U.S.A., cancelled by double ringed “SHANGHAE BAU FRANCAIS / 1 JUIL 65”, French transit c.d.s. “PAQ. AN. V. SUEZ AMB. MARS No.2 / AOUT 65”, a U.S. depreciated currency c.d.s. (N.Y. 60 AM PKT. / OR U.S. 80 NOTES / SEP 11”. The New York depreciated currency date stamp with “60” cents (in coin) at the top, “OR U.S. NOTES 80” at the bottom was not recorded in North Atlantic Mail Sailings, or in Winter’s 1996 update of New York Exchange Office markings. Depreciated U.S. currency marks are rare on covers from Far East, especially to those routing through French P.O. On the obverse side, a rate mark “2” (double weight) in blue crayon, and another rate “42” in blue crayon as well. The “42” rate was the amount of the French debit, leaving the U.S. 18 cents (i.e. 60 minus 42 = 18, and then 18 divided by 2 = 9 cents per quarter ounce). The American portion was composed of 6 cents sea postage and 3 cents internal postage per quarter ounce according to Mr. Hargest’s guidance. 1864及1865年一對往來上海之史前封，鈐上海法局日戳，另見多處中轉及郵船日戳。

1864 (16 Aug) an entire letter from Foochow to New York via French MI delivery, endorsed “P. Messageries Imperials str. (steamer)”, franked with HK QV 1862 24c green and 1863-71 30c vermilion, tied by “B62” obliterator in blue, manuscript rate mark “ 2/ 1½ ” in red crayon, London Paid c.d.s. (7 Oct), New York local charge “5 CENTS” accountancy mark h.s. and “PAID” h.s. in red oily shading. The flap with 2 strikes of HK c.d.s. (23 Aug); the contents give some details of trade situations in Foochow. A very good early stamped mail from Foochow before the introduction of Foochowfoo c.d.s. in 1867. The mail was carried by French MI steamer “Imperatice” and “Peluse” to Marseilles which further taken forward to New York via London. A seldom seen Foochow mail stamped with HK QV stamps in use of French MI packet steamers. 1865 (15 Jan) an entire sheet sent from Hong Kong to Saigon via Singapore, franked with HK QV 8c yellow and a pair of 6c at the bottom left-hand corner, all of which were cancelled by “B62” obliterator. On the obverse side, a manuscript rate ‘4” matching the HK QV 8c B.P.O. postage fee to Saigon, together with a forwarder oval mark “WM. PUSTAU / HONGKONG” underneath the pair of HK QV 6c. The 12c rate represented the Late Fee paid for this mail. On the flap, a French packet double-circled “LA BOURDONNAIS / 24 JANV 65”, Hong Kong c.d.s., and a double-circled Singapore c.d.s. This entire sheet is illustrated in Lee Scamp’s French Mail Paquebot Far East Itineraries page 60, in which it is stated that the mail being carried by P&O Carnatic from Hong Kong to Singapore, and then picked up by French packet steamer La Bourdonnais M.I. carried from Singapore to Saigon. An excellent mail represents an unusually complex mix of both French and British packet routing, and even more so adding the Late Fee paid feature. An extremely unique postal history item. 1872 (1 April) an unusual Hiogo mail to Bordeaux, France, franked with French Ceres 3 x 5 ctms, cancelled by “YOKOHAMA BAU FRANCAISE FR. / 8 AVIRL 72”, boxed frame “AFFRANCHISEMENT / INSUFFICIANT” in black, manuscript rate marke “1f – 3s” (i.e. 1f 30 ctms), a red double ringed transit c.d.s “PAQ. ANG. V BRINDISI / A MOD(ANE)”. On the reverse side, a slew of French transit c.d.s. This mail went through a highly unusual routing combination of PMSSCo and P&O vessels. The mail started with Hiogo where it rides on New York /PMSSCo steamer to Yokohama, and then picked up by P&O packet services from Yokohama all the way to Brindisi. The use of 15 ctms was only paid enough for the internal rate charge between Hiogo to Yokohama, and the postage due “1f3S” represents the 10 grams postage charge by the GB packet service from Yokohama to France effective 1871. Certification: Philatelic Federation of Japan Certificate. 1872.4.1 兵庫寄法國，貼五穀女神像5生丁x3，銷橫濱法局日戳及欠資指示戳。此信先經PMSSCo船隻至橫濱，再由鐵行輪船公司自橫濱送至布林迪西。而15生丁僅足以兵庫至橫濱間郵資，故被罰欠資“1f/3S”。附日本證書。

ANG. V. SUEZ / A. MARSEILLE A” entry c.d.s. in red color. On reverse side, cancelled by “HONG KONG / C” origin c.d.s. manuscript “36” (decimes) for one oz letter, minor surface faults, a truly very rare example of the Hong Kong French Consular seal that we would not be able to see much others. This French Consulate mail was carried by British P&O packet ligne “PEKIN”, “CANDIA”, “VALETTA” arrived at Marseille on 24 April. With introduction to the content of the letters. Desrousseaux stated the CECA obliterator of Saigon is especially scarce. A nice group. 1860至1864年一組五件Victor Charner（法軍艦隊司令）書信，出自中國或法屬印支，另附一件出自天津法軍B局之封面。貼拿破崙三世票或貼票被撕去，展示了各款少見之早期法軍在華郵戳，如中央郵局、A局、CECA菱形殺手戳及PD戳。附有對書信內容之簡介。Desrousseaux指西貢CECA殺手戳尤其難得。出色的一組。
