1865 (Aug 23) Culberton envelope addressed to New York “Via
Southampton” bearing HK QV 1863-71 2c brown pair, 12c pale greenish
blue, and 30c vermilion tied by the “AMOY PAID” c.d.s. in red, Hong
Kong “B62” in black with London Paid transit c.d.s plus New York
“PAID” and “5 CENTS” accountancy handstamps along with manuscript
rate mark “1 9½” and “1” rate marks in magenta ink; the reverse
with Hong Kong and New York c.d.s. When Amoy BPO was established,
the stamped covers were required to bring to Hong Kong Post Office
for sorting where HK stamps would be cancelled by B62 obliterator.
But at the origin Amoy, the red Amoy Paid red cds would be required
to cancel on the HK stamps firstly. This method was adopted before
the use of A1 and D27 obliterator. Pearson recorded about 16 stamps
QV stamps applied with this cds while Webb recorded 13. An
exceptionally fine and desirable example of the rare AMOY PAID on
HK QV stamps Culberton cover. Holcombe Certificate 1997.
