1902 Yunnanfu to Peking via French Indochina. Red band cover, f.w. Coiling Dragon 10c for international rate, tied by Yunnan PO tombstone cancel. Transit Mengtsz (3 Mar), Hokow (11 Mar). In combination with Navigation and Commerce issue 25c, tied by Laokay (12 Mar) cds. Transit Hanoi (20 Mar), Haiphong (21 Mar). Arrived Peking French PO (8 Apr). Cover opened out for display. With Peter Holcombe signature. According to Lee Chung Ping, combination franking was still required by French Indochina Post after 1902, probably until Oct 1902. Given the inauguration of Yunnanfu Chinese PO on 12 Oct 1901, combination covers of Chinese and French Indochina franking only existed for about one year. One of the three existing examples of domestic mails from Yunnan with combination franking and paying for international rate. Arrived New York (25 Jan). Before 1905, outgoing mails from China via Hong Kong had to be franked with British HK stamps. However, as this card was sent via French Indochina, combination with Hong Kong stamps was not required.
