1897 Empress Dowager surch small figure 2c/2ca with inverted surch variety (Chan 39d), tied by Shanghai dollar cds. Of the one sheet (40 stamps) produced with this error, there are less than 25 documented examples which have survived. To date, practically all known examples are canceled by “Shanghai” dollar daters between 20 Sep and 8 Nov 1897. There a number of defective examples, which resulted from the postmaster at Hankow having torn stamps with this error from commercial mail.
