1841 By Clement Edward, Hong Kong (2 Aug) to England. Entire letter, sent "Overland Mail via Falmouth" and rated "8", showing "Eastern Expedition" annotation. Transit Calcutta (1 Oct), Liverpool (5 Feb). Arrived Weston-Super-Mare (7 Feb). Although free Indian postage was offered to the miliary, onward transmission still had to pay Indian postage. In 1841, British Plenipotentiary Charles Elliot and Chinese Imperial Commissioner Kishen came up with a tentative agreement, Convention of Chuenpi, by which Hong Kong was ceded. However, both governments rejected the convention and dismissed Elliot and Kishen respectivelyfrom their positions.
