1853 Western style cover from China to USA, rated “44” and “65”, applied with London (20 Jul) and New York transit cds (4 Aug). Illustated in article “Hakodada, Japan June 1855”, “Japanese Philately Vol 47 No. 5” (Dec 1992). As European (except the Dutch) and American were not authorized to trade with Japan until 1859, mail service across the Pacific did not begin until 1867. This mail took Marseilles route and carried by Hindostan and Sultan
