1869 (3 May) blue entire from Nagasaki to London via French ligne mail, franked with a strip of 3 French Laureated 40c, cancelled by “5104” diamond lozenges, together with a “SHANGHAI BAU FRANCAIS / 13 MAI 65”, red boxed “PD”, London arrival c.d.s., and the despatch forwarder oval mark “L. KNIFFLER & Co / NAGASAKI”. The reverse side cancelled by a very rare “SHANG-HAI / PAQ. FR R No.1” octagonal d.s. A good French mail illustrating Nagasaki mail privately carried to Shanghai where it handed over to French P.O., thereby saving some money, though this route to Europe via China was illegal at the time.
