1864 (16 Aug) an entire letter from Foochow to New York via French MI delivery, endorsed “P. Messageries Imperials str. (steamer)”, franked with HK QV 1862 24c green and 1863-71 30c vermilion, tied by “B62” obliterator in blue, manuscript rate mark “ 2/ 1½ ” in red crayon, London Paid c.d.s. (7 Oct), New York local charge “5 CENTS” accountancy mark h.s. and “PAID” h.s. in red oily shading. The flap with 2 strikes of HK c.d.s. (23 Aug); the contents give some details of trade situations in Foochow. A very good early stamped mail from Foochow before the introduction of Foochowfoo c.d.s. in 1867. The mail was carried by French MI steamer “Imperatice” and “Peluse” to Marseilles which further taken forward to New York via London. A seldom seen Foochow mail stamped with HK QV stamps in use of French MI packet steamers. Ritchie Bodily Collection.
