1936 Mountaineering expedition cover by climber Frank Smythe to England via Gangtok, frankless. On front with Everest type G handfilled h.s. On reverse with Skkim oval seal and a label explaining the late delivery of the mail. F.w. Britain 2-1/2d upon arrival at Surrey (26 Jan). 2020 (Dec) David Feldman, lot 41182. On 6 Jul 1936, the expedition returned to Gangtok and found that all the mails since April were not delivered. Unsent mails were found in the postmaster’s house. He was arrested for stealing mails. He was released in 1937 after appeal. 494 out of 1000 missing mails were retrieved.
