1840 By Ralph Smith, Tinghai (22 Dec) to Calcutta. Entire letter, with "From China Expedition" heading for free postage. Arrived Calcutta with "SHIPLETTER" d.s. Both British and Chinese government were unsatisfied with the slow progress of negotiation and turned to reinforce their troops.
